Copyright Fair Use Creative Commons and Public Domain

Intellectual Property Laws and Ramifications for Teachers

There are three types of intellectual property recognized in the United States.
  • Copyright
  • Patent
  • Trademark
Trademarks protect brands. Patents are for innovative ideas and last around twenty years. Copyrights are what impact teachers. Facts and ideas can't be copyrighted; however, performances, text, translations and many more works can be copyrighted which prevents teachers using these works without permission from the copyright holder. Simply, we often buy the books we use in classes. This website has four sections. Each section has a screencast about it's area surrounding copyright. Screencasting is the primary presentation tool but each section also contains supporting links, videos and audio files.
